My paint work has started bubbling up Shocked , the car has been off the road 3 months and completely cover over with one them breathable outdoor car covers but with the high winds recently it started to come off and flap about so I removed the cover yesterday.

This afternoon I had look at the car and noticed the paint (or is it the lacquer?) bubbling up 'just on one wing'
the majority of the bubbles are about 1-2 mm in diameter  Crying or Very sad  Crying or Very sad  Crying or Very sad .

I did notice towards the end of last summer quite a few spots appearing on the bonnet that looked like lime scale marks the size of 1 & 2 pence coins but would not rub or polish off, they haven't bubbled up ‘as yet’.

I wash & polish my other car & bike with same stuff so don't think it is that causing it, as far as I know the paintwork is original from new (1996).

Anyone got any idea's what's causing this  Question

Thanks in advance  Wink .

Hi DJ.

MGF's are lacquer over base coat and I would say from looking at the photos the top surface lacquer has been damaged in some way allowing water to get between the layers(osmosis). Despite what folk might think the paint on MGF's is very good so I supect that the panel may have been poorly re painted at some point in its past (You may be able to confirm). If its only the wing then don't despair you may be able to do it yourself but I supect a body shop is on the horizon. I used a local guy here in Dronfield who resprayed my MX5 Boot, Bonnet and both bumpers for £250 which wasn't to bad. He would be happy to advise if required.

Sadly I suspect the cover has speeded up this process.

I can come and have a look if required.

Which reminds me our MGF needs to pay a visit also, somebody backed into a car Rolling Eyes

Cheers Bryn

Cheers Bryn, I've posted the same question on another forum 'I'll not say which one  Rolling Eyes ' it seems quite a few folks have had the same problem as me using a breathable cover.
Like you said the cover just helps speed up the process but as far as I know it's never been resprayed and no obvious signs it.

I'll have to have the wing resprayed so if you could give me your local man's details I'll get a price of him.

Question Slim chance this Bryn but he's is not called Bryn 'lives in Drony' and got a gararge down Heely?.

Hope you managed to sort your paintwork out!

Just as a matter of interest; what do you wash your car with?

Hi TB & welcome to the site  Wink

yes thanks the paint work is now sorted, after several attemps by the paint shop, in the end old paint/primer had to be removed down to bare metal, to get rid of the old paint that had a fault.

The use of a car cover din't help matters either  Sad  'found out later' Mad

Yo John
