Chris, I put a post on National Website and sent an email to MX5OC representative. The feedback for now is positive (they even think about an article in Magazine)
This will have to be affordable so, as some mentioned, we'll probably race standard kits (with little upgrade). For now, we are talking about Tamiya M04-M Kit with MX5/EunosRoadster body shell.
The all Idea is to give the opportunity to most of us (Members and their families) to taste Racing competition, Racing engineering, Racing strategy and Racing management (as they would do in real Car Racing Championship). Basically, a Mini Merlot Project for the 10th of original Merlot Project cost (or less).
But it MUST stay affordable and it is the team who should make the difference, not the Bank accounts...

Ok Gents. We need a little more thought here. First of all costs.
Radio gear 27 or 40 Mhz is around £30 to £50
Nicads and charger for Tx say £25
Batteries roughly £13 each and we would need a least 4 or 5
A fast charger for field use. £50 for a cycle type. (I have one though)
A twelve volt suppply for the charger when used in halls or at home. £25 (I have one) or use a car battery which will also cost.
A slow charger if one above is not capable £7(I have one)
And this is before the kit, which ever we choose.
So very roughly we are looking at £220 before car kit.
Competative kit £100 to £150. Chris please confirm on this.
Plus the Tamiya Eunos Roadster is now discountinuied and is over 3 years old so by the time we start racing in 2009 ( as per the comments of MX5 OC) we will be well out of date and possibly scratching for parts. This brings me on to the choice of car especially in view of the comments made by the MX5 OC re safety.
Where are we planning to use the car? The roadster is not reall suited for carparks or the carparks we would have access to. Small stones / pebbles will soon damage the M-04M chassis. Plus the use of public carparks is really an option with out permission and we will certainly not get that in summer! Plus the possibilty of third party insurance required. I know I had it when I was racing at national level. Chris is probably the one to ask on this one. I certainly have it for aircraft. Plus I would add that I had to use my third party insurance once for breaking the ankle of a spectator of which I would have been otherwise sued for.
If the MX5 OC want a spectator specticle then a "buggy" is perhaps a better option becuase of the more varied surface you can use it on. We are not forced to have a smooth service at a rally, maybe only grass!
I am certainly not put off by the idea in fact I am all for it but we need to decide very soon which route to take.
Eg once we are ready with a car do we bring together other areas to race with which would mean having to sort outdoor / indoor venues depending on vechicle type or do we race the car in pre- existing race meetings with general public in which case the car would not be competative at all.
Perhaps when we get together with Chris so we can decide on a action plan.
Chris if I am wide of the mark with any comments please say so, your the one that races currently and I am am drawing on past experience. I only fly at present.
My prefered option would be to formulate a team with Chris as the main driver if thats what he currently does and the rest form the team back up. We could then race publicly (as Chris already does) and with other areas when we could.
If you drag me back into this god knows were we will end up, out of pocket most likely
Comments please

And another thought if current MX5 OC members are already into RC racing then they will already have cars and race publicly as does Chris. So would they want to buy another just for this series?
I will shut up now and go look at RC sites! |

And another thing, does it really need to be a MX5 shell???
Surley the ethos or concept behind the idea is the most imortant thing? |

Info for Don Valley (where I used to Race)
The track
at Don valley is used by national meetings and is a great track.
Tyres,
Nosram Vtec 24s are popular indoors. At Dronfield Schumacher yellow
rally blocks are recommended. Best is to ask around the fast drivers
what they are using. Don't bother thinking about using anything from
Tamiya.
Mods, just about any hop ups are allowed as long as the
car meets BRCA rules. To race there you will have to join the BRCA as
part of the club membership fees. You will also need either a
transponder mount on your car or a 6.5mm hole in the body so a
transponder can be fitted to count your laps. Most racers will have a
personal transponder in their car which you could buy later.
Motors.
Don't know what classes they race but they should have a stock/27turn
class and maybe a 19 turn class with the top class being modified,
which is usually using 9-10 turn motors these days. I would recommend
taking out the 11 turn and fitting a 27 turn stock motor, to be
competitive in modified class racing will require plenty of skill
and usually 5 packs of IB4200 cells.
Time. Not sure what you mean but the races will last 5 minutes.
You will usually need at least 3 sets of crystals.
Best
advice is to go to the club first and ask questions. They should give
you the best advice on what tyres work best and what classes they run.
They should allow you a few weeks racing to see if you like it before
you have to join the club and the BRCA, which is needed as the BRCA
membership includes insurance. Best to visit both venues, then you can
see which you would prefer to race at.

well, if it is not a mx5, I'm not sure it will be approved... Not if everybody creates their own body shell (custom made from nargorine tubes... |

Been to model shop today, He said he may be able to get the shells seperately but when they are gone thats it. Bear in mind you could wreck a shell in just a few races depending on your experience and accidents.
