Hi All,
I'd like to gauge potentiel interest of people regarding a "racing project".
But first, I'd like to give a little background. Last summer, we (members of Peaks and Pennines) were thinking about doing our own racing MX5. something similar to the merlot project. Unfortunately and despise the members enthusiasm, we came across a few issues (find a car, a space to keep it, insurance etc...) and the project didn't go forwards...
Anyway, today, talking about it with another member, we came with something that would more affordable, less time consuming etc... A proper amateur car racing project... and we even thought we could call this "Mini Merlot Project"
The project would be based around this :
Yes, a Radio Control Racing Mx5 (1/10th). From what we have seen, the starting budget to get a car and race it would be about £200 (more accurate figure will be required). Keeping in mind one racing team would be formed by 5 people, we are roughly taking about a tank of petrol each...
What we were thinking was: If we get a few teams ready to build such a "racing car", we could probably create Mini racing competition.
We could have a neighbor area competition, national competition etc...
So the Question is :
Do you think such a project could interest members and their family ??? Some members could involve their children as member of their teams??? As I said, I'm trying to gauge the member interest...
Thanks
Bill

What we could do with is a former British R/C champion to help us out, do we know one? |

And I asked to Aera Coordinator to gauge the interest in theirs. Some have answered they will present the project to their next meeting.
Edit: On the Web (Warning: if you don't know to buy this in next 10 minutes, don't go there)

The car could quite easily be made into a low power drift car, there are many hop-ups available for this also. I would say that this car is perfect for beginners of for Simone's second car! Joel

I think we do have a ex rc national champion that walks amongst us
but he would not be allowed to drive, it wouldn't be fair not on the other areas. |

Bryn, There are few guys at mx5oc that seem to be in this sort of thing for quite a while... you may play with them

i take it the ex champ is you then bryn, well done son pop into the cyber pub and we'll share a pint
bill if you have a go at driving please stay away from puddles, & don't ask me to drive as i may scrub the tyres thinking its barkston heath,
just a thought, if we let bryn drive it would take away his advantage if we made him use his tom tom _________________ eunos 1.6 v-spec racing green, wolfrace alloys

bill i've just been looking at this thread on NEM's branch forum, heres what one chap had to say
Interesting idea. There are already loads of R/C clubs around the country so you could probably sort a sort of national tour out I would think. It's an expensive hobby to get into but splitting the cost over a team would be good. There are also issues with the endless addons you can do to your car to make it quicker..
I race 1/10 electric cars every Friday night at West Bridgford school so if anyone fancies coming along to see what it's like, let me know. My mate Rob (who's been karting with us before) has an MX-5 as it happens but I dunno if it's in a race-ready state.
Edited to add: In fact I forgot to mention that Rob is the chairman of the West Bridgford club so if you needed a venue, we could probably sort it out. I'll have a word with him.
bill we could get in touch and go and have a look see if you fancied it
maybe we could interest our resident champ into a trip
