Am thinking of upgrading from my mk1 1.8iS

I can read all tech spec etc, but would like bums on seat advice to handling power difference roadholding etc, between mk2 and 2.5, what is difference between them, what year did they change ?

any difference in spec, engine gears, limited slip diff, etc ?

is the new engine less torquey ? 1.8 or 2.0

was thinking of a 2000/2001 model icon, has 6 speed box, bit more bhp i think ?

Jill you swapped from a mk1 didnt you ? is yours a mk2 or 2.5? what difference have you noticed? and which do you prefer, and why ?

any help or advice much appreciated, from real people not magazines and spec sheets. thanks.

still love my mk1 but am tempted, may need another mistress !! Evil or Very Mad

Hi Pete,

If you're thinking Mk3, take the 2.0 performance, the 1.8 is sloggish...

If you're thinking Mk2/2.5, a Sport  1.8iS. A friend has a nevada.... great toy, he loves it.

The Phoenix is nice tooo

Why don't you go for a test drive?

Hi Pete
I love my MK2 but I still think the Mk1 is a hard act to follow. Mk 1 looks much better and I think it held the road better and the seating postion was more comfortable as you can tell I loved it to bits, but bryn is right go and have a drive in a few and see for yourself. I know mick Gauntlet from Yorkshire Ridings thought he would hate the Mk3 but he loves it to bits although I dont think he likes the look of it he says he dosnt have to look at it only drive it.

I agree that the Mk1 will always be a hard act to follow. After all it's the design that started it all.
They pretty much got it sorted with the chassis / handling of the beast.
I'm gonna jump straight to the Mk3 at this point. Wink
In respect of the latest incarnation, the Mk3 is a completely different animal altogether. It'll feel, at first "get in" like a Focus! Surprised
But when you start driving it, the grown-upness [-sp?] will hit you very quickly. It's a world apart from the Mk1 but, somewhere and not long after the first few miles you will feel the breeding.
Mk3 (NC) adds the retained look of the Mk1 in it's rear end to its bag o' tricks too!!

The brakes are very sharp and you WILL stop quickly! With ABS controlling the motions, to boot, you also feel safe under emergency braking.
The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) has easily saved me a few times from going around in a complete circle...oops! But is easily switch offable should you wish to take it for a play, "un-use" wisely though. 160BHP ~ 158BHP (160PS for the pedants) going through the rear end in such a light frame adds extra buzz to the experience.

Anything else you need to know from an actual driver, drop me a PM and I'll either provide honest, unbiased feedback or at least point you in the right direction for some sound advice. No salesmen in sight!!  Laughing

Pete..never mind all the bumf on here about MK3s ..they are not a patch on the "proper" MX5..you only have to ask and you can have a try in my 2.5 S next time we meet..i will prob be playing out this Sunday..personaly i think the MK3s are over priced and do not have the same "character"...save yourself some money and buy a Mk2.5 for 10k instead of 20k and take it on a nice holiday..i have had numerous test drives in the MK3 and still i keep my 2.5...bought the MPS 3 instead but thats another story..my opinion is un-biased and public you do not need to PM me...maybe see you Sunday stupotvfr
